Core Aeration
Core aeration involves the removal of small soil plugs, or cores, directly from the lawn. Aeration is achieved with the use of hollow tines that “core” the soil, leaving evenly spaced gaps throughout the soil. This is performed to reduce soil compaction, which allows for a greater exchange of oxygen, water and nutrients into the underlying soil. Core aeration is commonly performed on heavily used turf areas, which become compacted over time and it helps to control the buildup of thatch.
